3 Essential Skills for Personal Development

Personal development is an ongoing process, and I want to share with you some essential skills.

  1. Self-Awareness and Self-Knowledge. Take the time to get to know yourself, your strengths, and your areas of improvement. Understanding yourself is the best first step to growth and for working with others. For example, if you know that you have strength as an event planner, you now know a skill that you can offer to the world. Or maybe you want to use that skill to advance your career or to start a business. The bottom line is that understanding your strengths helps you to make decisions for your future. Also, if you are aware of your areas of improvement, you can use that knowledge to ask questions about things you may not understand. Finally, taking regular time to reflect on yourself helps you to stand firm on your beliefs and values. The list could go on, but you get the point. Knowing yourself is a good step toward a successful future. If you are not sure where to start, start with personality assessment tests or ask friends and family their perspective on your strengths and areas of improvement.

  2. Journey Mindset. Move through life with the philosophy that you are on a journey. There is always something to learn, so be okay with the idea that you cannot know it all, nor will you have it all figured out when you leave the earth. Therefore, as you approach each situation ask- what can I learn from this? or leave situations asking what did I learn from this? When you do this, you set yourself up to embark on a lifetime of learning, rather than becoming complacent or stagnant in your development.

  3. Active Plan. Have an active plan for every aspect of your life. This means that you take some time to reflect on various areas of your life and how those areas look in your life. Some examples include financial goals, relationship goals, or career goals. The key to setting a plan is asking yourself-What do I want to accomplish in this area of my life? For example, with relationship goals, you might want to have better communication with friends and family. Knowing this, you can start to reflect on resources to do this and how you will include those around you so that you meet that particular goal.

Taking strategic action for your personal development helps to move you closer to your goals and success.
