Which Goals Should I Start First?

May 8, 2017

I am so glad a student asked the question, "what goals should I start first?" We can all become bogged down with so many goals and aspirations that our goals can seem overwhelming. If your goals seem overwhelming, take a step back to determine if you have too much on our plate and/or to decide which goals need to take priority in your life. Below are some tips on determining which goals to start first. Prioritizing your goals does not mean you are giving up on other dreams, you are just better concentrating your efforts so that the energy you spend to achieve your goals lends the best impact.

1. Write Down Each of Your Goals. The first thing you need to do when deciding which goals to start first is to write down all your goals. To do this ask the question, "What are some things I want to achieve in life or over the next 5-10 years." As you reflect on that question, you should find yourself with a list of goals you want to achieve.

2. Note the Links Between Your Goals. Noting the links between your goals means that you understand which goals link to others or which goals help you to move toward other goals. For example, if you have a goal to obtain a marketing degree and a goal to become a top marketing consultant, you might need to determine which of these goals should come first. In other words, which of the goals will help move you toward the other goals. Will you need to obtain a marketing degree prior to becoming a top marketing consultant or will you need experience in the field of marketing before pursuing a marketing degree. Take note of which goals link to the others and make a timeline of goals. When making the timeline, ask yourself, what needs to be accomplished first? Knowing which goals need to be accomplished first helps you to concentrate your time and energy on 1 or 2 major goals before moving on to other goals in your life. This strategy assists with effectiveness and efficiency.

3. Note the Impact you Want to Make. Each of us were born with unique talents and we all have a calling during our time on earth. While reviewing your goals, place checkmarks beside goals that align with things you do well, things that bring you joy, and things about which you are passionate. Once you have done this, now ask yourself the question "What impact will I make during my time on earth?" When you have thought about the impact you want to make, also ask "What goals on the list align with that impact?" Knowing the impact you want to make might help you see which of your goals need to move to the top of the list versus those that can wait.

Now that you have a few tips, go ahead and start working on your goals TODAY!
